Annaprasana, Naming Ceremony and First-Birthday Gold Gifts

Annaprasana
Annaprasana is the ceremony of a baby's first solid food, usually rice, typically held around six months of age. It marks an important step in the child's growth.
Traditional gifts include:
- a silver or gold spoon, used to feed the baby their first bite,
- a silver bowl or plate,
- gold or silver bangles sized for a baby,
- a small gold coin to keep for the child's future.

Barasala and naming
In Telugu families, the barasala is the naming ceremony, traditionally held in the baby's first weeks. The baby's name is announced, and the family gathers to bless the child.

- black-bead bracelets with gold, traditionally believed to protect the child,
- a small gold chain or pendant, kept for when the child is older,
- gold coins.
The ear-piercing ceremony is also an important milestone in many families, often with small gold studs.
First birthday
The first birthday is a big celebration, and a lovely occasion for gold:
- baby bangles or bracelets,
- a small pendant with the child's initial, a deity or a meaningful motif,
- tiny gold studs, if the child's ears have been pierced,

Safe designs for babies
Babies explore with their hands and mouths, so safety must come first:
- Avoid small parts that could come loose, such as beads, charms or drops, which can be choking hazards.
- Avoid chains and necklaces for babies to wear, particularly while sleeping or unsupervised, due to the risk of strangulation. Keep chains as keepsakes until the child is older.
- Choose smooth edges with no sharp points or rough finishes.
- Use secure fastenings, such as screw-back studs designed for children.
- Supervise at all times when a baby wears any jewellery.
- Check fit regularly, since babies grow quickly and bangles can become too tight.
