22K vs 18K vs 14K Gold: Which Purity Should You Choose?
When you buy gold jewellery, one of the first choices is purity. In India, you will usually be choosing between 22K, 18K and 14K gold. Each has its strengths. This guide explains what karat means and which purity suits which kind of jewellery.
What karat means
Karat (K) measures how much pure gold is in an alloy, out of 24 parts. Pure gold is 24K. Lower karats contain other metals, such as silver, copper or zinc, which make the gold harder and change its colour.
In India, hallmarked gold shows both the karat and the fineness, which is the purity in parts per thousand:
- 22K916: 91.6% gold
- 18K750: 75% gold
- 14K585: 58.5% gold
You will find this grade in the BIS hallmark on your jewellery, along with the HUID. Read How to Buy Gold Jewellery in India (2026) for how to verify it.
22K for traditional gold
22K is the standard for traditional Indian gold jewellery. It has:
- a rich, deep yellow colour that families associate with gold,
- high gold content, so more of its value comes from the metal itself,
- softness, which makes it ideal for detailed handwork such as nakshi and filigree, but less suited to holding stones securely.
22K is the natural choice for plain gold jewellery, including chains, bangles, harams, vaddanams and temple jewellery. See Plain Gold Jewellery.
18K for diamond and gemstone settings
18K contains less gold and more alloy, which makes it stronger. That strength matters when stones are involved:
- Stones are held more securely, especially in prong settings.
- Settings keep their shape better over years of wear.
- It comes in more colours, including yellow, white and rose gold.
For these reasons, most diamond jewellery, including solitaires, studs and diamond necklaces, is made in 18K. See The Diamond 4Cs for Indian Buyers.
14K
14K is harder still and lighter in colour. It is used for some contemporary and everyday designs, particularly where durability and a lower price matter more than high gold content. It is less common in traditional Indian jewellery.
Resale considerations
When you exchange or sell gold jewellery, its value is based mainly on the pure gold it contains. That means:
- 22K pieces contain more gold per gram, so they carry more metal value by weight.
- 18K and 14K pieces contain less gold per gram, so their metal value by weight is lower.
- For studded jewellery, stones are usually valued separately from the gold.
This does not make 18K a poor choice; it is the right choice for diamond jewellery. It simply means you should understand what you are buying. Read Gold Buyback and Exchange Policies.
Which should you choose?
- Choose 22K for traditional plain gold, heirloom pieces and jewellery you value mainly for its gold.
- Choose 18K for diamond and gemstone jewellery, and for white or rose gold.
- Choose 14K for everyday contemporary pieces where durability matters most.
