Weight-Based vs Design-Based Pricing: What You Are Really Paying For
Why does one gold necklace cost more than another of the same weight? Why do some jewellers price by the gram while others show a single tag price? The answer lies in the difference between weight-based and design-based pricing. This guide explains both, and how to judge value rather than just price.
Weight-based pricing
Most traditional gold jewellery in India is priced by weight. The formula is:
- Gold value: net gold weight multiplied by the day's gold rate for that purity.
- Making charges: a percentage, per-gram rate or flat fee.
- Stone charges, if any.
- GST.

Design-based pricing
Some jewellery, particularly contemporary and designer pieces, is sold at a fixed price that reflects the design as a whole rather than a weight calculation.
This is common for:
- designer and branded collections,
- lightweight pieces where design and craftsmanship matter more than gold weight,
- diamond and gemstone jewellery, where stones make up much of the value.
With design-based pricing, you are paying for the look, the craftsmanship and the brand, as well as the materials. It can still be good value, but the price is harder to break down.
Where diamonds change the maths
In diamond jewellery, the gold is often a small part of the total price. The diamonds, their size, quality and number, usually make up the largest share.
This means:
- Two diamond pieces of the same gold weight can differ greatly in price, depending on the diamonds.
- Gold weight alone tells you little about the value of a diamond piece.

Judging value, not just price
The cheapest piece is not always the best value, and the most expensive is not always the best quality. To judge value:
- Understand the breakdown: gold, stones, making charges and GST.
- Compare like with like: same purity, similar weight and similar stones.
