Plain Gold Bangles and Chains: A Buyer's Guide
Plain gold bangles and chains are the foundation of most jewellery collections. They are worn every day, gifted at every occasion and passed down through generations. This guide explains the main styles, how to choose between solid and hollow designs, how to get the size right, and how to care for them.
Chain styles
Gold chains come in many styles. Some of the most popular include:
- Rope chains: twisted strands that look rich and catch the light well.
- Box chains: square links that create a smooth, sturdy chain, ideal for pendants.
- Curb chains: flat, interlocking links, a classic for men and women.
- Cable chains: simple oval or round links, light and versatile.
- Singapore chains: twisted, sparkling links that suit delicate everyday wear.
- Ball or bead chains: small gold beads strung together.
- Handmade chains: traditional designs worked by hand, often heavier and more intricate.
Tip: if you plan to wear a pendant, choose a chain strong enough to hold it, such as a box or cable chain.
Bangle styles
Plain gold bangles range from delicate everyday pieces to heavy traditional designs:
- Plain round bangles: simple, smooth and timeless.
- Machine-cut bangles: with patterns cut into the surface for sparkle.
- Textured or hammered bangles: a softer, handcrafted look.
- Nakshi bangles: hand-engraved or embossed with traditional motifs. See Meenakari and Nakshi Work.
- Kadas: thicker, heavier bangles, often worn singly. See Bangles and Kadas.
- Openable bangles: with a hinge or screw, easier to put on and take off.
Solid vs hollow
Solid pieces are made entirely of gold. They are heavier, more durable and better for daily wear, and they hold up well to knocks.
Hollow pieces are made from gold tubing or shells. They look substantial but weigh less, so they cost less. The trade-off is that they dent more easily and are harder to repair.
For everyday wear, solid is usually the better choice. For occasional wear, or for a bold look on a budget, hollow can work well. Always check the net gold weight, not just the size. See Plain Gold vs Studded Jewellery.
Getting the size right
Bangles in India are usually sized by inner diameter, commonly in sizes such as 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8. To find your size:
- measure a bangle that fits you comfortably, across the inside,
- or ask your jeweller to size your hand, since bangles must fit over the knuckles,
- choose a size that slides on with gentle effort and does not fall off easily.
Chains are measured in inches:
- around 16 inches sits close to the base of the neck,
- around 18 inches falls to the collarbone, the most popular length,
- 20 to 24 inches falls lower, good for pendants and layering,
- longer lengths suit traditional long necklaces. See Long Necklaces (Haram).
Care
- Clean regularly with mild soapy water and a soft brush, then dry thoroughly.
- Store pieces separately, so chains do not tangle and bangles do not scratch each other.
- Remove chains before sleeping, swimming or exercising to avoid stretching or breaking.
- Have clasps and joints checked from time to time, especially on chains worn daily.
