IGI vs GIA Certificates: What the Paperwork Actually Tells You

When you buy a diamond in India, you will often hear about certificates from IGI and GIA. But what does a diamond certificate actually tell you, and how do these two laboratories compare? This guide explains what a certificate covers, the two labs, how to verify a report online, and what certification means for set jewellery.

What a certificate covers

A diamond certificate, more accurately called a grading report, is an independent assessment of a diamond by a gemmological laboratory. A typical report includes:

  • a unique report number,
  • the shape and measurements of the diamond,
  • the 4Cs: carat weight, colour, clarity and cut. Read The Diamond 4Cs for Indian Buyers,
  • polish and symmetry,
  • fluorescence,
  • whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown,
  • sometimes a laser inscription of the report number on the diamond's girdle.

A certificate does not tell you the price. It tells you what the diamond is, so you can judge whether the price is fair.

IGI

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) was founded in Antwerp in 1975 and has laboratories in many countries, including several in India. It is widely used in the Indian market, both for loose diamonds and for jewellery, and it grades a large share of laboratory-grown diamonds sold today.

IGI reports are common in Indian showrooms, and many buyers will encounter them first.

GIA

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a non-profit institute founded in 1931. GIA developed the 4Cs framework and the internationally recognised colour and clarity grading scales. Its reports are widely regarded as a global benchmark, particularly for larger and higher-value diamonds.

GIA reports are especially common for solitaires and important stones.

Which is better?

Both are established, internationally recognised laboratories. Some in the trade consider GIA's grading more conservative, which is one reason GIA-graded diamonds can command higher prices. For everyday diamond jewellery, an IGI report is very common and useful. For a significant solitaire, many buyers prefer GIA.

What matters most is that the report comes from a recognised laboratory and that it matches the diamond you are buying.

Verifying online

Both laboratories let you check a report on their official website:

  1. Find the report number on the certificate.
  2. Visit the lab's official report check page.
  3. Enter the number and compare the details with your certificate.
  4. If the diamond has a laser inscription, ask the jeweller to show it under magnification and confirm it matches.

Always verify before you pay, especially for solitaires.

Certificates for jewellery vs loose stones

  • Loose stones and solitaires are usually graded individually, with a full report for each stone.
  • Jewellery with many small diamonds is often certified as a whole piece, showing the total diamond weight and an overall colour and clarity range, rather than grading each stone.
  • Very small stones are rarely graded individually.

For set jewellery, ask what the certificate covers and how the stones were assessed. Read Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds for how certificates identify each type.
