Sankranti 2027 Gifting Guide: Gold for Daughters, Sons-in-Law and Elders
Sankranti is the biggest festival of the year in many Telugu households, a time for family reunions, harvest celebrations and generous gifting. In January 2027, families will gather again for Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma. This guide suggests traditional gold gifts for daughters, sons-in-law and elders.
Sankranti traditions
Sankranti marks the sun's move into Makara (Capricorn) and the end of the harvest season. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, it is usually celebrated over three days in mid-January: Bhogi, with bonfires and new beginnings; Sankranti, the main day of worship and feasting; and Kanuma, dedicated to cattle and the land. Check your panchang for the exact 2027 dates.
Homes are decorated with colourful muggulu (rangoli), families fly kites, and married daughters often return home with their husbands. Gifting, especially of new clothes and gold, is a central part of the celebration.
For daughters
Sankranti is a special time to honour daughters, particularly those who have recently married and are visiting home. Thoughtful gold gifts include:
- gold bangles, a classic choice for festive wear,

- for fathers and grandfathers: a gold chain, a ring or a kada,
- for the home: gold or silver coins with deity motifs, or silver pooja items.
Order early
Sankranti falls soon after the New Year, and the weeks before it are busy for jewellers. To avoid a last-minute rush:
- start shopping in December, so you have time to choose,
