Repair, Polish and Resizing: What a Good Jeweller Can Fix

Jewellery is made to last, but everyday wear takes its toll. Chains break, stones loosen, rings stop fitting and gold loses its shine. A good jeweller can fix most of these problems. This guide explains the common repairs and what to expect.

Polishing

Over time, gold develops fine scratches and loses its lustre. Professional polishing:

removes surface scratches and restores shine,
cleans areas that are hard to reach at home,
can refresh matte or textured finishes, where appropriate.

Resizing

Rings can usually be made larger or smaller by adding or removing a small amount of gold. Plain bands are the easiest to resize; rings with stones all around the band, such as eternity rings, may be difficult or impossible to resize.
Bangles are harder to resize than rings. Openable bangles and some designs can be adjusted, while others may need to be remade.
Chains and necklaces can be shortened, or lengthened with extra links or an extension.
Vaddanams and waist belts can often be adjusted with additional links. See Vaddanam.

Clasps and chains

Broken chains can usually be soldered back together.
Weak or broken clasps can be repaired or replaced, often with a stronger clasp.
Stretched or worn links can be reinforced.
Pearl and bead strands can be restrung with new thread, ideally with knots between pearls.

Replacing a weak clasp early is one of the simplest ways to prevent losing a valuable piece.

Stone tightening

Loose stones are a common problem, especially in rings and earrings worn daily. A jeweller can:

tighten prongs that have worn or bent,
re-tip worn prongs with new metal,
reset stones that have come loose,
replace lost stones with a matching stone.
