How to Store Jewellery in Hyderabad's Humidity

Hyderabad's climate swings from hot, dry summers to humid monsoon months. Humidity can affect jewellery, causing tarnish, weakening threads and dulling some stones. With a few simple habits, you can keep your jewellery in good condition all year. This guide explains how.

Humidity and what it does

• Silver tarnishes faster in humid air, turning dark or yellow.
• Lower-karat gold (such as 14K or 18K) contains more alloy metals, which can tarnish or discolour slightly over time. High-purity 22K gold is much more resistant.
• Pearls can be affected by extremes: too much moisture can weaken silk threads, while very dry conditions can make pearls lose lustre.
• Polki and kundan pieces can be damaged by moisture reaching the foil backing.
• Threads, cords and doris can weaken, stretch or develop mould in damp conditions.

The monsoon months, roughly June to September, are when care matters most.

Boxes, pouches and silica

• Store pieces separately, in individual soft pouches or a lined box with compartments, so they do not scratch or tangle.
• Use silica gel sachets in boxes with gold, diamonds and silver to absorb moisture. Replace or dry them regularly.
• Use anti-tarnish strips or cloth for silver and lower-karat gold.
• Keep jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from bathrooms, kitchens and windows.
• Avoid plastic bags for long-term storage of pearls, which need some air.
• Dry jewellery fully before putting it away, especially after wearing on a humid day.

Pearls and stones

Pearls:

• store flat, not hanging, to avoid stretching the thread,
• keep them in a soft pouch or cloth, separate from harder jewellery,
• do not seal them in airtight containers with strong desiccants for long periods,
• wear them regularly if you can, since contact with skin helps maintain lustre.

Polki, kundan and enamel:

• keep them in lined boxes, away from moisture,
• wrap in soft cloth, and add silica gel to the box.

Emeralds and treated stones: store away from heat and direct sunlight.

Bank lockers are secure for valuable pieces you wear rarely, such as bridal and heirloom jewellery. Lockers can also be humid, so use sealed boxes with silica gel and check pieces periodically.
