Jewellery Insurance in India: Is It Worth It?

Jewellery is often among the most valuable things a family owns, yet many families never insure it. This guide explains what jewellery insurance typically covers in India, what insurers need from you, and how to decide whether it is worth it.

Please note: this is general information, not insurance or financial advice. Policies vary, so read the policy wording carefully and speak to your insurer or a licensed advisor. Insurance in India is regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

What policies cover

Jewellery can usually be insured in two main ways:

  • As part of a home insurance policy, often as an add-on or under a section for valuables.
  • Through a dedicated jewellery policy, offered by some insurers and sometimes by jewellers in partnership with insurers.

Depending on the policy, cover may include:

  • theft and burglary,
  • fire, flood and other natural disasters,
  • accidental loss or damage, in some policies,
  • cover while travelling or outside the home, in some policies.

Common exclusions can include normal wear and tear, unexplained disappearance, loss while the jewellery is left unattended, and loss where security conditions were not met. Always check the exclusions.

Valuation requirements

Insurers usually need proof of what the jewellery is and what it is worth:

Because gold prices change, valuations can go out of date. Ask how the insurer handles changing values and whether you should update your valuation periodically.

Cost vs benefit

To decide whether insurance is worth it, consider:

  • the value of your jewellery, and how much you could afford to lose,
  • how often you wear it, since jewellery worn regularly or while travelling is at greater risk,
  • where it is stored, since jewellery kept at home carries different risks from jewellery in a bank locker,
  • the premium, compared with the value covered,
  • the policy terms, including exclusions and how claims are settled.

For valuable collections, particularly bridal and heirloom jewellery, many families find the peace of mind worthwhile.

Alternatives

If insurance does not suit you, other steps reduce risk:

  • Bank lockers: secure storage for pieces you wear rarely. Note that bank locker contents are generally not automatically insured by the bank.
  • Good records: keep invoices, certificates and photos safely, in case you ever need them.
  • Careful wear: avoid wearing very valuable pieces when travelling or in crowded places.
  • Proper storage at home: see How to Store Jewellery in Hyderabad's Humidity.
