Engagement rings have become a central part of weddings across India. Whether you are planning a proposal or choosing a ring together, this guide explains the main styles, metal choices, how to get the size right, and what to know about budget and certification.

Solitaire

A solitaire is a ring with a single diamond. It is the classic engagement ring: simple, elegant and timeless.

Prong settings, usually with four or six claws, let the most light into the diamond.
Bezel settings, where metal surrounds the diamond, offer more protection for an active lifestyle.
Shapes include round, oval, princess, cushion, pear and emerald cuts. Round is the most popular for its brilliance.

Halo and cluster

Halo rings surround a centre diamond with a ring of smaller diamonds. The halo makes the centre stone look larger and adds sparkle.
Cluster rings group several smaller diamonds together to create the look of one larger stone, often at a lower cost than a single diamond of the same apparent size.
Three-stone rings feature a centre stone with one diamond on each side.
Pavé bands add small diamonds along the band for extra sparkle.

Metal choices

Yellow gold: classic and warm, and very popular in India. It can make slightly warmer diamonds look whiter.
White gold: gives a bright, modern look that highlights the diamond.
Rose gold: a soft, romantic option.
Platinum: naturally white and very durable, at a higher price.

Sizing guide

Getting the size right matters, especially for rings with diamonds along the band, which can be harder to resize.

Borrow a ring that already fits the right finger, and bring it to the jeweller.
Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are slightly larger.
Consider the knuckle: the ring must slide over it comfortably.
Account for the climate: fingers can swell in Hyderabad's heat, so avoid a ring that is very tight.
Ask about resizing: plain bands are easier to resize than pavé or eternity rings.

Budget and certification

Set a budget first, and balance diamond size and quality within it.
Prioritise cut for sparkle, and choose colour and clarity grades that look clean to the eye.
