How to Check If a Jeweller Is Trustworthy: 10 Questions to Ask
Choosing a jeweller is one of the most important decisions in buying jewellery. A good jeweller gives you honest purity, fair pricing and service for years to come. This guide explains what to check, and ends with ten questions you can ask any jeweller before you buy.
Hallmark and HUID
Hallmarking is the most basic check for gold jewellery. A current BIS hallmark shows three things: the BIS standard mark, the purity grade (such as 22K916) and a six-digit HUID unique to the piece.

Certificates

Bill transparency

Reputation matters. Look at a jeweller's reviews, ask friends and family who they trust, and notice how long the business has been serving its community. A jeweller that families return to across generations has usually earned it.

Ask these before you buy. A trustworthy jeweller will answer every one clearly.
- Is this piece BIS hallmarked, and can I verify the HUID now?
- What is today's gold rate for this purity, and when was it set?
- What is the net gold weight, separate from any stones?
- How are the making charges calculated for this piece?
- What are the stones, and is there a certificate?
- How are the stones priced, and what are their weights?
- Will the invoice list gold, making charges, stones and GST separately?
- What are your exchange and buyback terms for this piece, in writing?
- Do you offer cleaning, repairs and resizing after purchase?
- Can I take time to think, and will you hold the piece for me?
Pay attention to how the jeweller responds. Patience, clear answers and no pressure are good signs. Vague answers, reluctance to show the hallmark, or pressure to decide quickly are reasons to walk away.
